Stanfree Lane

Local History > Local History 1 > Oxcroft
An old road linking the hamlets of Oxcroft, Stanfree and Shuttlewood which has been superseded by more modern roads of the twentieth century.

It starts at the northern end at grid ref. SK. 477738 and runs in a south westerly direction to the end at SK. 470724.
The road starts in both directions metalled and then progresses on to a cart track and then the middle part into the valley and over the Hawke Brook is in a very poor state, narrow and is only passable with care.

There is evidence in several places of the original stone cobbled road which has been washed out by the ravages of time and there are several good views of the surrounding area.

It has had various names on the maps, early on it is Stanfree Lane, then Church Lane and now Church Road.
