Victorian Sluice Gate.
Found after a site walk by Godfrey Downs-Rose in the 1990’s around the start of the Arkwright opencast operations.
The gate was cleaned and restored but as these photographs were taken in 2008 before the recycling centre was built I am unsure of its current demise. From memory it is around grid reference SK 429 706 (I will have to check on this) near to the site of Arkwright station.
Of its purpose I am unsure as there appears to be no water source connected to it nearby.
It may have been for the management of the water drained
from the fields higher up from Calow Green in the drainage channels or goytes
that run along the field boundaries, I will have to trace my footsteps from
2008 on site to help answer the question.
